Controversies in sports –Dialogue, a resolutionWednesday, December 21, 2011 Without doubt sports is always characterized with all sorts of controversies as it has all the intricacies of argument, misunderstanding and related vices hence a resolution can only be found in dialogue to extenuate. Many cases in point yet unresolved in Gambian sports had been so swept under the carpet because instead of dialoguing, each is reduced to its corner to bicker As this had never augured well for our sports, advocacy on a stake holder’s conference must be heeded. Going down memory lane, in 1988 when the poor performance of the scorpions at the Guinea Bissau Zone two sparked a lot of controversy, the Government then dissolved both the association and team. This led to the formation of a commission of inquiry transcending to a constitutional format committee ushering in the first ever nationally elected association for football administration. Dialogue paid dividends as the various stakeholders confabs paved the way for understanding. However, in 1993 when the said structure was dissolved by the then minister of Youths and Sport Buba Baldeh on the pretext of solving a problem of discord without resorting to dialogue, the brouhaha that ensued is in the history books of being the most turbulent times in Gambian football. Similarly in 2003, the debacle leading to an extraordinary. General assembly to impeach an incumbent president could have been resolved through dialogue to avert the bad blood that exists hitherto. The narrative is essential to set light on why the need for dialogue which is eluding us in our resolution of controversies in our sports. Recent happenings in this sphere saw the unfortunate scenario of the G.N.O.C. Fiasco and the war of words and blame game between G.F.A, Gambia for Gold and the Ministry of youth and sports which instead of dialoguing to resolve both only culminated into press briefings hence washing our linen in public. Why and why not are our official inclusive stakeholders not resolving to my advocacy for an inclusive stakeholder’s conference to resolve such issues remain a backlash in our sports. One would have thought by now, there would have been an institutionalized routine dialogue format on a monthly, quarterly or yearly basis to extenuate such controversies. Alas however, this suggestion of mine is always nipped in the bud by being brushed aside each time I advocated it even though the need for it is both felt and cherished by all and sundry. Undoubtedly, in their quiet corners, each official in our sports circles adores my advocacy but outwardly there is the pretext of dismissal of my ideals yet still things are just swept under the carpet only for them to simmer again. Can we rethink on this? One begins to wonder why the indifference to this significant endeavour in getting our sports to thrive as it only opens the canker worm of speculations and insinuations only retarding our sports and focus on the development to impact on national development. Is it our fear for our officials to keep their many skeletons in the cupboard? If not why can” we do go through the dialogue format to ensure transparency. Accountability, probity all lending credence to good governance the parlances of our dear revolution in order to sanitize things? A WORD FOR THE WISE IS ENOUGH?
