Discipline and EducationMonday, February 21, 2011 Discipline is a method of training ones mind or body or of controlling ones behaviour, an area of activity, where necessary. It is the ability to control ones behaviour such as the way one lives, works, eats etc. Education as we understand is a continuous process of seeking knowledge, training or learning something for the benefit or satisfaction of mankind in any aspect of life. It is indeed a vast area to explore. God the Almighty had enjoined man to seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave. Whatever we learnt must be understood and be implemented when required, anywhere and at any time as an agent of change of our behaviours, if not we are not much better than lower animals that we put yokes on to pull ploughs or those we slaughter and feed on. This is why Prophet Muhammad said, it is obligatory upon my followers, male and female to seek knowledge. By this, we will be able to distinguish between evil and good, what is right and what is wrong, what are acceptable and unacceptable, safe and dangerous, advantageous and disadvantageous and so many things within our environment among others. Discipline and education are indispensable. Discipline and education are designed purportedly for human beings. Wherever people are discipline naturally helps in the control erratic behaviours to pave ways for the peaceful atmosphere to prevail. Where discipline is not instituted, there is the likehood of a complete survival of the fittests and consequently, the functionality of the thinking faculty of minds would be handicapped and would not be able to coordinate effectively and efficiently with the limbs and others parts of the body to execute functions directed towards the satisfaction of mankind including the fittests themselves. Discipline is a vital recipe of education that balances and standardizes the required and quality education for the development of any nation, society, workforce etc. This can come in any form as a mechanism to control human conducts which is unpredictable in order to achieve the desired goals of any institution. Scriptures thought us that the Almighty God had disciplined prophets before sending them to their various people and emphasied the need for discipline to them at all times and they had succeeded in their prophetic missions. When man deviated the devine orders, he is in the state of lost and in the hands of Satan, the caused. Whatever level of development we attained, when deviated from the paths of God, we are bound to encounter difficulties knowingly or otherwise. The examples are not far from fetched. The West had developed in terms of education and all other aspects of human life and disregarded discipline which had plunged them into series of problems, which we are all living witnesses to. Strict discipline is imposed on army and police recriuts to become disciplined in the social works lying ahead of them. The same thing applies to other institutions like health, trade, and learning institutions. In pursuiut for knowledge any field osf study or subject is taught, especially in a school, college or in a university. Schools should have reputation for high standards of discipline because they deal with the most critical humans, who are unpredictable. School do not only transmit skills and knowledge in to people but also inculcate morals in them. These are hericullous tasks which need to be done with conserted efforts and professionaly. The society, parents, school authorities as well as the ministry of Education and the government are all major players in instituting a viable discipline in Gambian schools. Why is our government spending huge sums of money in recruiting police and army? Why so many police stations being opened in the country? Why building prisons in the country? Why making constitutions, the legislative body and security presents in gatherings? All for discipline in different ways. Education for all Initiative means every young Gambian should be educated. If sure, those young children should be obedient to orders at that tender ages to be part and parcel of them in their youthful ages. It would be very funny if our so called elites circulate documents, booklets condemining even the simplest form of discipline to grroom children become courteous to have good morals when they become adults, respect authority and have love for their country at all times. When the children do not have such training school teachers and other school authorities they would not care even in the wider society to practice the same bad behaviours. As long as our leaders at the helm of out ministry fail to study the required methods of disciplines base on our tradition Gambian, what we saw in some schools will be a tip of an ice berge, as the national competition is just at the corner, you cannot sit in your offices and want to use the universal remote control to control the forms of discipline in the school systems. School authorities have to be on the grounds. A well desciplined society or nation, produces the most appereciable labour force who show respects to their works, laws, co-workers and the society as a whole in any field of work.
