Muslims in Gambia were once more divided on the date for the observance of the Muslim feast of Koriteh as the Supreme Islamic Council (SIC) continues to face defiance.

Some communities prayed on Tuesday as declared by the Islamic council, but majority observed the feast on Wednesday, The Daily News gathered from several sources across all regions in the country.

Around 80 percent of the communities in the country’s North Bank region observed the feast on Wednesday, according to our reporter there.

A number of communities in the West Coast region and Greater Banjul where the council seem to have much influence also observed the feast on Wednesday. They include some highly religious villages such as Sifoe, Bassori and Kartong all in West Coast region and London Corner, Manjai and some part in Bakau and Bakoteh in the Kanifing Municipality.

A sheer majority of communities in the rural regions of Central River, Lower River and Upper River also prayed on Wednesday, our investigations revealed.

The Gambia’s supreme Islamic council’s decision for Gambia to be on the same timetable with Mecca has been greeted with disapproval by some erudite Scholars and Imams, who believe that Gambia should, for instance, begin and end fast upon sighting a crescent in Gambia or neighbouring countries in the same geographical line.
