Gambia Needs Democratic Transformation Says Lawyer Darboe![]() Monday, January 23, 2012 The main opposition United Democratic Party leader lawyer Ousainou Darboe has told party supporters at a rally held on Saturday 21st January 2012 at Ebony junction in Serrekunda that The Gambia needs a genuine democratically transformation. Darboe told supporters that for The Gambia to attain the norms and principles of democracy , the ruling APRC government under President Jammeh must be flush out of power, saying that today Gambians still continue to live in abject poverty and lawlessness. ‘’The reason for this rally is to thank Gambians for their solidarity to the UDP during the just recent concluded presidential election and I am convince that Gambians voted massively for me,” he said. According to the lawyer cum politician, the UDP in consultation with the party’s central committee will soon convey a meeting to discuss plans on the forthcoming National Assembly election which is to hold in March. ‘’The ruling APRC party and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) connived to cheat the pools by allowing foreigners to come and registered and vote in the just concluded presidential election. Just few days ago, Jammeh was sworn in as the President for another five year mandate and the price of basic commodities are skyrocketing,” he said. Darboe challenged the IEC to introduce on the spot counting system in the National Assembly Election in order to avoid any form of malpractices. Speaking earlier, Alhagie Modou Lamin Sanneh the National Assembly Member for Kiang West who also doubles as minority leader said within the eleven days campaign period allocated during the presidential election, Gambians have voted massively for the UDP. ‘’One main factor that lead to the unfairness of the pools is the involvement of security forces, the use of government vehicles, local chiefs, governors and other officials,’’ he noted. As far as Kiang West is concern, no government vehicles and other officials will be allowed to involve in the coming parliamentary election as we have noticed during the presidential election. ‘’This coming National Assembly election is the only chance left for Gambians to decide. This needs to be done wisely,” he said. Minority leader Sanneh noted that in any democratic nation, the President should be answerable to the people and discuss their plights saying that is rather not the situation in The Gambia. “The President is threatening people to vote for him or risk losing development from his administration,” Sanneh said. Momodou Lamin Syngle Nyassi, UDP Propaganda Secretary, Dembo by Force Bojang UDP, National President all echoed similar remarks. In attendance at the well attended meeting were party militants and National Assembly Members of the party. Author: Lamin Njie | Related Topics |
