Named after Gambia’s football legend, Gift Biri Biri academy FC of Farato were on Friday crowned champions of the sixth edition of the late Matarr Sarr tournament after defeating Serrekunda East football academy at the East football field.
The Farato boys won 4-3 in a post-match penalty shot-out, following a goalless draw in the regulation time.
In the Friday encounter, both sides played good football, but Farato boys were more determined even though Serrekunda East team was the host.
Farato boys looked much focused in the second half of the game, with much creativity of goal scoring chances but all went in vain.
Meanwhile, in the female category of the competition, Banjul South defeated Sukuta female team 3-nil.
Ajama Sambou scored the first goal in the 19 minutes of the encounter from a set-piece. Khadijaou Badjie came with the second goal in the second half of the game and Mariama Ceesay wrapped up the scores for the city girls.
Both players were given awards for their participation in the competition as no cash was given to the players.
Talking to The  Daily News Sports, on behalf of the board, Ebrima Mendy said: “Every participant is a winner in this tournament, and we also organised this to keep away children loitering.”
“We also send players to Norway to participate in an international tournament. We have sent many players in the likes of Hamang Conteh, Famara Jarju and others,” Mendy said.
Mr. Mendy thanked their friends from Norway whom he said contributed a lot in the development of the tournament and football in general in the country.
