“I’m a Full Professor,” says Kah

Vice Chancellor Kah
Friday, June 22, 2012

Professor Momodou Kah, the first Gambian-born Vice Chancellor of the 10-year-old University of The Gambia, has insisted that he is a full professor and that his professorship was conferred by a recognised university in the US.

Kah’s professorship came under scrutiny on Wednesday at the magistrates’ court in Banjul, as the lawyer for Gumbo Touray, a former top UTG official, who is on trial for false information, cross-examined him

Gumbo Touray, former Director of International Affairs, UTG, is alleged to have falsely informed the President’s office that Prof Kah is bent on appointing his relatives at the institution, has gross disregard for the university governing council and wastes UTG’s resources. He however denied the charge.

“You said you became a professor in 2007 in the US. Do you have any documents certifying you as a professor?” defense lawyer, Badou Conteh, enquired.

“Yes,” Kah replied.

At this juncture, Conteh produced the curriculum vitae (CV) of Prof Kah which he printed from Kah’s website.

However, when the CV was shown to him, Prof Kah refused to comment on the said document.

“This document is not signed, Your Honor,” Kah told the court, adding that the said CV was from his personal website and not that of the UTG.

Lawyer Conteh, nevertheless, moved to tender the said CV as exhibit, but the prosecutor raised an objection. The court however overruled the objection and admitted the CV.

Meanwhile, the presiding magistrate, TaiwoAlagbe, issued an arrest warrant against AbdoulhamidAdiamoh, the proprietor and editor of Today Newspaper.

“I order the arrest of AbdoulhamidAdiamoh and he should appear on the next adjourned date to show cause why he should not be charged with contempt of court,” Alagbe said.

The warrant came after Badou Conteh reported that Editor Adiamoh made personal attacks against him in a report in his paper while doing his job as a lawyer to defend his client.

“I am surprised that he mentioned things in his report which were never said in court,” Badou Conteh said. “He attacked me personally in his report.”

The case continues June 28.
