Is It ICC Or ACC (African Criminal Court)???![]() Wednesday, January 25, 2012 The International Criminal Court (ICC) Monday ruled that four Kenyan officials including two presidential hopefuls- Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto, and two other men must stand trial at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands. The four are charged for crimes against humanity during the post-election violence of 2008. The court ruled that there was enough evidence to try the four Kenyan politicians on suspicions of orchestrating violence in the wake of the disputed 2007 elections that killed at least 1, 200 people and forced hundreds of thousands from their homes. The decision of the court came at a time when some parts of the world were going under difficult moments. The question now is, is the ICC only out to target African leaders. How about leaders in other parts of the world accused of crimes against humanity during or after the tenure of their office? Are they sacred cows or what? If the ICC failed to change gears now, African leaders would be convinced that this court is control by some external forces that are there to only deal with Africans in order to achieve their objectives by using the ICC as a tool. There is a likelihood that this will create a situation where African leaders would prefer to rule for life than to give up power, a situation which would negatively serve the continent. But let such leaders also be warned that no matter what, if they use that to continue to miss rule justice will caught up with them one day just like it did with mighty Al Gadhafi. Gone are the days when one can just pushed him or herself on people? By looking at the present situation at the ICC, most of the accused persons currently standing or about to stand trial at the ICC are ex-African leaders. Charles Taylor, ex-leader of Liberia and Laurent Gbagbo, ex-leader of Ivory Coast are all in The Hague, standing trial on different charges. There is an arrest warrant issued by the ICC that is hanging over the head of Al-Bashir president of Sudan. Where are we heading to African? It is just a matter of time before another African leader or leaders be indict by the court. We are not defending any African leader to be specific but rather we are trying to be critical the way and manner the court deals with leaders, especially those from the African continent. Some political observers believed that the likes of George Bush, former president of the United States of America and Tony Blair, former British Prime Minister should also go to the ICC to face charges for their role during the invasion of Iraqi. Will the ICC do that, we don’t know. | Related Topics |
