Wednesday, September 28, 2011
The Kabafita Youth and Children Development Association recently held its first ever summer classes for grades 6 and 9 students as part of their efforts in promoting education.
The Secretary-General of the association, Jali Mamudu Kuyateh described the summer class as a right step in the right direction.
‘’ In order to acquire a good education, one needs to be well prepared to take up the challenges ahead,’’ he said.
The summer school according to him, registered 25 students who were drawn from Brikama and its environs as well as 8 staff volunteers under the supervision of the child focal person and his assistant.
“The teaching staff consists of university of The Gambia (UTG) students, higher teachers certificate (HCT) students and qualified teachers,” he said.
He further explained that the students were divided into four groups for the running of the social activities included in the summer school, namely Kunta Kinteh, Nelson Mandela, Kwameh Nkuruma and Patrice Lumumba group respectively.
“During the debate and quiz competition, Lumumba and Kinteh met while Nkrumah and Mandela met in the first round respectively. All the competitions were very though for the incorruptible judges to decide the winners, but as the common saying goes in every competition there must be a winner. It was Kunta Kinteh and Nkrumah who won their tickets to the finals,” he said.
The finals for both competitions were held on the 9th September 2011, and Nkrumah won the debate.
The best debater of the competition was Mr. Omar Kanyi, a member of the association and a student of Kinderdoff Bottrop Upper Basic School.
Dawda Bah emerged as the best student in the Mathematics, Social and Environment Studies (SES). Malick Jallow won best Science prize and Kaddijatou Saidy took the best prize for English language.
The closing ceremony was graced by members of the association, parents, delegates from Yusuf Youth Initiative (YYI) in Scotland and a cross section of the community.
Certificates were awarded to the participants.
