Sanna Nyassi missed a late opportunity to save champions Colorado Rapids from a 2-1 loss at Chicago Fire which dumped them out of the US Open Cup on Wednesday.
The hosts took the lead on the stroke of half time; Colorado equalized in the 47th minute and Fire regained the lead in the 61st minute.
Colorado came close to equalizing in the 70th minute. Nyassi was played behind the Fire defense but couldn’t slip past Johnson, who slid in and corralled the ball at the top of the box.
Nyassi had a second opportunity in the 86th minute. The Gambian international had a good look at goal, but sailed his 20-yard half volley wide of the right post.
Chicago will face the winner of Portland-San Jose in the next round of Open Cup play.
