The executive secretary of the National Youth Council, Mr Marcel Mendy has tasked local government authorities to empower young people in the country. Mr Mendy was speaking during a two-day training on Malaria Prevention and Behavioral Change Communication owards malaria pandemic at the Kanifing Municipal Council conference hall Friday December 16, 2011. He said the young population that is been referred to as the future and agents of change should first be provided with all the necessary support by those in decision making. “All local government authorities should emulate KMC, who has been doing all in their powers to support all youth activities in the municipality,” he added. According to Mendy, empowering young people will no doubt contribute in the socio-economic growth of the country. “The young people do not belong to only the NYC and the ministry of Youth, but instead to all the sectors within the government and it will be prudent if all supports them in their endeavors. “Since the young population is the future and agents of change, investing on them should be the first priority area for all as government alone cannot it. “I again take this opportunity through the media to challenge the other local government bodies in the length and breadth of the country to contribute immensely on the young people as well as to empower them through their councils,” he said Mendy said, The Gambian youth are committed and willing to contribute their quota in the development of The Gambia. He noted that it is now the duty of those at the helm of affairs to consider them.
