The members and players of The Gambia National Paralympics committee (GNPC) on Sunday in an executive meeting at their main office in Kanifing Estate spoke out against what they call poor management and corruption affecting their association.
According to the members and players, the association never holds annual general meeting (AGM).
“Since the inception of the association, the executive never hold any general meeting,” said the vice captain of the wheel chair basketball team, Barra Nyang.
“Since 1999 no financial record was disclosed to the members and the players of the association. We were silence for the past years but we want everything to be clear now, we want changes, enough is enough they have been cheating us for the past years,” said Barra.
Due to the late arrivals of the executive the Sunday’s meeting which was scheduled to commence at   2pm kicked off at 5pm and only three members out of 6 of the executive turned up.
The vice captain of the basketball team Barra Nyang said, no constitution was shown to them since the inception of the association. “As any sporting discipline, you must operate according to your policy, but our executive is not doing that,” he said.
Barra continued: “They are running the association for their interests, they are doing this because many of us have not been to school but we are also going to do what we are capable of doing,” he added.
Alagie Bajinka, a wheelchair basketball player also an athlete said they have rights to speak out.
“We have rights to say concealed things in the association; they are running the association for their own interest. Many of our players are quite due to frustration,” said Bajinka.
Meanwhile, according to the president of the association Sulayman Colley, their agenda at the meeting was to restructure the association.
“The information we gathered from the International Paralympics Association (IPA) at our last annual congress in Beijing, that national Paralympics committee should operate as an international body like the Olympic Committee is operating,” he added
During the question and answer session, Sulayman Colley the president said he is not interested in any annual general meeting.
And the accountant Dabo confirmed that no account record was revealed since the inception of the association.
