Teachers from Lower, Upper basics, Senior Secondary Schools and Maddarasa schools in the Central River Region (CRR) of The Gambia held a one-day meeting at Medina Wassu on the 30th  June, to improve on teaching and learning process at schools in the region.

This was first of its kind, for 9 clusters to organise such a meeting in the region which comprised of 11 schools.

Speaking at the gathering, the president of The Gambia Teachers Union (GTU) Mr Lamin K. Marong, thanked  the teachers for their cooperation they had in their various schools.

MrMarong said, “Teaching is a noble job. The profession is a big title once you are called a teacher. The GTU will defend teachers at all cost, but once you are involved in any criminal matter, you are a criminal; and if you are guilty, the GTU will have very little to defend you.”

The Deputy Secretary at the GTU, Essa Sowe, said teachers in the region were  to make sure to  do their job in order to promote teaching and learning process at schools.

He said the importance of teachers at the schools could not be over emphasized, because of its importance as  role models in every society.

“The GTU will advocate for  the advancement and development of teaching and learning profession  to go higher  heights. Teachers should be given the chance to benefit from the GTUCCU. We are always ready to support teachers for the smooth promotion of the teaching profession,” said Sowe.

The Principal Education Officer of GTU, Alpha Camara, highlighted the importance of data keeping in schools. He said reliable data in schools was evidence on which policies are built.

He said they helped  to identify needs, set goals and also motivation.
