The Gambia Press Union (GPU) is commemorating the death of Deyda Hydara a veteran journalist who was killed 10 years ago. In a press release send to the media signed by the Executive Director GPU, states that it will take a form of a public lecture to be held at TANGO conference hall Friday 19 December 2014 at 4pm. The GPU remembers the late Deyda each since 2004 when he was killed. The press is reproduced in full below.
Deyda Hydara was killed in
a drive-by shooting on the night of 16th December 2004. His murder plunged the
media fraternity into a mood of despondency that it is yet to recover from.
Since then, the media in The Gambia has been commemorating the event with
public lectures, addressing pertinent issues that affect journalism,
journalists and development in general in The Gambia.
Despite repeated calls for the State to investigate the murder and punish the culprits, no discernible step has been taken so far. The first report on the murder conducted by the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) in 2005 openly blamed the deceased for his own death. It came up with all sorts of hypotheses without pushing the clues. And since then, there has been no further action on the matter.
In the quest to seek justice and promote press freedom in the country, The Gambia Press Union (GPU) is organizing a public lecture on the theme ‘The effects of Impunity on Security and Development’ to commemorate the murder of Deyda Hydara.
The public lecture is slated for Friday 19th December 2014 at the TANGO Conference Hall, Fajara starting 5:00pm prompt.
