Over 240 village support groups drawn from 36 villages in the West Coast Region recently concluded a training on exclusive breastfeeding; maternal nutrition amongst others.
The training conducted by National Nutrition Agency (NaNA) was funded by World Bank through The Gambia Rapid Response Nutrition Security Improvement project and was help in Brikama, Basori, Kampasa and Somita respectively.
Speaking  at the training held at the sisters quarters in Brikama, NaNA  field coordinator office of the Vice President, Musa Dahaba said that conducting the training concurrently  in different sites will help  in the implementation of the ten steps which are; the commencement of breastfeeding within an hour after delivery by mothers, carrying out exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months and also the introduction of complementary foods using a variety of locally available foods at the age of six months.
He further said that the objectives among other things are to encourage women and ensure that adequate and appropriate diet is observed during pregnancy and lactation.
NaNA nutrition field officer Malang Janneh noted that the main aim of training is to improve the health and nutritional status of mothers and their infants while stressing the need for attitudinal change.
He called on the participants to encourage communities to provide an enabling environment for mothers to practice optimal breastfeeding.
