Wearing of Helmets Should Not Be Compromised

Motorcyclists in The Gambia are nowadays rarely seen wearing protective gears - helmets – as they ply the roads. It could be recalled that the compulsory wearing of helmets was enacted into law sometime ago, but it seems both the police and motorcyclists pay less heed to it.
Motorcyclists should know that they are at high risk if they ride their motorbikes on the roads without putting on helmets. Suffice it to say that wearing of helmets reduces the risk of injury to the brain in case of accidents. When the head is seriously injured the chances of death could be very high. It’s amazing at times to see motorcyclists carrying women with their babies on their backs without anyone of them wearing a helmet.
This is really suicidal and should be discouraged with immediate effect. The law enforcement personnel should crack down on them. Vigorous sensitizations should be mounted to enlighten the public especially the motorcyclists so that they know the risks involved in riding motor bikes without helmets. I hope the motorcyclists themselves know that it’s better to ride with helmets than without them, for the life they safe could be their own. So the idea of wearing helmets while riding   motorbikes should be enforced to the letter. If one could recall the rigorous enforcement of the fastening of seat belts which has just been recently introduced, has contributed immensely to the acceptance of the practice.
Therefore, the wearing of the helmet should not be compromised for life is more precious than anything.
